Roles and Responsibilities Parents

Roles and Responsibilities for Parents

Parents can best support their child/ren in their learning by:
  • Providing an environment conducive to learning (access to technology, safe and quiet space during daytime);
  • Engaging in conversations on posted materials, assignments;
  • Monitoring time spent engaging in online and offline learning;
  • Considering variables such as preferred learning times (morning, afternoon, evening);
  • Encouraging attendance, as much as possible, to the regular video conferencing sessions offered by each of their child’s teacher/s; and
  • Supporting emotional balance by providing ample room and time for reflection, physical activity, conversation, and play.

Role of Parents in Reflecting with Students
All students are still developing independence, so a teacher-parent partnership is necessary for students to engage in online learning tasks and to access online resources. The designed learning tasks and activities will provide direction and support to families with the understanding that task completion depends on each individual families’ circumstances. We recognise that parents may have more than one child to guide, therefore we have framed the support for the learning experience within one day not to exceed 3 hours of computer time usage. Please understand that this is a guide only, and as students progress in age, their time-on-task should increase proportionately.

We ask parents for the following support:
  • Read the updates from your child’s teachers;
  • Increase your familiarity with Seesaw/Google Classroom/Canvas as our primary online instructional tool;
  • Read home learning tasks and activities posted on Seesaw/Google Classroom/Canvas with your child;
  • Help your child log in to online learning sessions for interactive lessons and activities with teachers and classmates;
  • Designate a place in your home so your child can work independently on his/her assigned tasks;
  • Encourage your child to provide a brief summary of the learning he/she is engaging in for each class to ensure his/her understanding of the content and of the process they are being asked to engage in to demonstrate their learning;
  • Note that our usual stance applies in that staff are expected to reply to email communication within 48 hours;
  • Even though many parents and staff have social media accounts, the key form of contact is the Schools’ online learning platforms and email system, not social media;
  • Monitor your child/ren’s social and emotional wellbeing and utilise the wellbeing resources available on the SLAS@HOME website. If necessary, contact your child/ren’s Core or Pastoral Care teacher, or the Chaplaincy Team, for support.

Primary School Specific Advice
  • Refer to Seesaw or Google Classroom for tasks, resources and due dates for tasks to be completed;
  • Students should be mindful when sending messages that a certain level of troubleshooting will be expected at home before asking the teacher for academic assistance. It is not like a normal classroom where lots of questions can be answered quickly to a group of you as you are all learning individually;
  • Email teachers if you require clarification or assistance for your child’s learning.

Middle/Senior School Specific Advice
  • Monitor your child’s Canvas calendar and support them in submitting assignments according to the established deadlines; and
  • Remind your child to access the appropriate support channel (discussion board or email) if your child, or you, have questions or require additional assistance.
